Adventures in Asia: Hong Kong, People, Parents and Pabulum

Hong Kong, People, Parents and Pabulum

In case your interested: We did have further adventures in Asia than we write about in this short series. We also went to Japan, which is in Asia but we've already mentioned that you can read about it here and here. We also had a brief taste in Turkey which can be read about here

This is not quite the scenic location that we thought it would be from all the history books, and old photographs and tales from relatives. Hong Kong is an expensive place to visit their culture has British over tones. But is largely a place for shipments and barges. There are rather a lot of tall tower blocks in Hong Kong, which is something to do with the immigration of the Chinese and other countries that fled there during their countries tribulations. At that time Hong Kong had a help the immigrant attitude and took in, housed and gave jobs till so many people immigrated that it was toppling the economy and new measures had to be brought in. I cannot explain to you the sheer volume of people there.

Hong Kong is where we met my fabulous in-laws, and ate the first bar of Dairy milk in months. Yum yum. Whilst we were there we went to an air conditioned (hallelujah) museum on the history of the area, where seemingly four people groups merged together to form the population. These four groups all have a different heritage, and they look quite different too.  One of the groups was the ‘Boat Dwellers’ who lived all year on a boat. The way of life for these people has completely changed as they are now on land. There are no cutesy boats along the river areas. Their traditions have changed, for a wedding the woman in the grooms family would sail to the wife to be’s family home and pick her up and sail her back to their ships to get married. The bride’s family would follow. Today as they no longer sail the tradition is represented by a dance that resembles rowing.

From here we had a quick sail across the Victoria harbour where there are one or two traditional Chinese Junk Ships. This was quite the experience as unlike the ferry in Istanbul there was nowhere to see anything but tall buildings and people.

A highlight of Hong Kong was stepping into a family run restaurant, which served the most amazing DanDan noodles with Beef Brisket, seriously incredible food soft tender beef with chilli peanut sauce and noodles. The restaurant wasn’t much to look at, just simple good food.

Then we went to the best place of all, Zhangjiajie, the place of the heavens. Find out more about that in our next post. They will follow as, in the meantime check out our picures on Instagram.

By the way, Pabulum is just a fancy word for food, I couldn't find any others that worked and began with a P.
