Dominant Dubrovnik

Dominant Dubrovnik

This is the place is the sight of the Game of thrones series and because of this much of the tourism is based off of the GOT franchise. Walking down the old higgledy-piggledy streets you are bound to bump into a tour or two. Unfortunately for us having never watched GOT it's rather lost on us. Still, we enjoyed wandering around the choice of shops, which seem to be developing in to nice homemade boutiques and products made by local artists rather an upwards step from the novelty touristic shops. Though we did thoroughly enjoy a wonder round the Christmas shop. Oddly still stuffed full of people at this time of year, and yes they were being hand made in the back of the shop. We watched a woman ice and glitter her baubles.

The Christmas Shop is on my phone, so here's a picture of Andrew picking a nose...
You can get quite lost in the lanes as there are so many of them inside the old town which is a beautiful, red roofed, white stoned walled fortress. A self contained city complete with all the old architecture, old churches and most of the food is all based within these walls as well. If you just nip outside of the walls you can walk along side all the boats and yachts. We sat there and watched he world go by before taking our long walk back up he hill back to our apartment.

We decided to do a bit of rock climbing (well bouldering really) just off the beach in front of the fortress, if you can manage it there are some cracking views off the edge. Views of the island in the distance and out to sea, can be a quiet place from tourist too ;). You can also hire a canoe out and go round the front of the fortress and in to the sunset.

On one of our last days we climbed on to the top of Dubrovnik hill, or Srd hill, took bloody ages, and the third mountain we have climbed since we left home. Seemed to be some sort of pilgrimage as there were 14 stations of the cross all the way to the top. On our travels it seem that a lot of places we have been to that have had a chequered past like Mostar. They have a battle or war and they stick a big christian symbol on the top. Anyhoo, got to the top after climbing the mountain and saw stunning views of all the surrounding countries and hill, and of course like the whole of Dubrovnik. We cheered to ourselves because we had climbed the same amount of steps as Macchu Picchu apparently. Whoop feeling super  fit now.
